The concept of divine kingship was essential for the continuance of civil order in Egypt. As the Pharaoh was seen as an emissary of the gods, life was good as long as balance was maintained. It was believed that the king's strength was derived from the support of the gods and as long as this was maintained no ill could befall the country. Once this was lost the kingdom was thrown into turmoil until a new strong king took the throne.
